Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for nasal and sinus diseases has changed sinusitis diagnosis and treatment over the last 30 years. Extended applications have been developed, now covering lesions of anterior skull base, orbit, pituitary, and intracranial pathologies.

The meeting is designed to familiarize the participant with the basics and the advances in diagnosis and surgical treatment as well as important pathophysiological aspects. The lecture series will provide the theoretical background for the endoscopic treatment concept. Video clips and cadaveric dissection of endoscopic operations will demonstrate the technique itself. Special lectures deal with extended applications like orbital and optic nerve decompression, pediatric sinus surgery, endoscopic assisted surgery of the orbit, and endoscopic CSF-leak closure. A “four-handed” approach to pituitary and other intracranial tumors will be highlighted in the advanced seminar on Rhino-Neurosurgery, where the latest developments in image guided navigation will be demonstrated.

The FESS workshop will be preceded by a day on “Basics of Septo-Rhinoplasty”. For this segment too, cadaveric hands-on-dissections on excellent specimens can be booked.

In addition, laboratory dissection will be available, providing hands-on experience utilizing endoscopic instruments and practicing diagnostic and surgical procedures on anatomic specimens. Endoscopes and instruments will be available for each participant. As the number of anatomic specimens available limits the number of participants, early registration is recommended. A first come, first serve registration policy will be applied.

On Saturday, during the advanced Rhino-Neurosurgery seminar, presentations will focus on approaches to skull base tumors, pituitary adenomas and beyond. “Four-handed” techniques and interdisciplinary surgical co-operation with our neurosurgical partners will be demonstrated by lectures, video clips and a live demo dissection. This course segment therefore can be of great value for neurosurgeons as well, especially when working together with their ORL-partners.
